We have applied for a Teaching American History Grant along with Grand Isle Supervisory Union and hope to offer other reading groups in the Champlain Valley with the help of the grant. Stay tuned!
Last spring, we sponsored a historical reading group in the Champlain Valley with funds from the
Flow of History grant.
What: A local book study group was facilitated by Karen Petersen (Shelburne Museum), examining the theme of Migration in American history during the 19th century.
Books used included:
Over the Earth I Come: The Great Sioux Uprising of 1862, Duane Schultz
Dragon's Gate, Laurence Yep (1867 Chinese arrival in California)
Roughing It, Mark Twain (two versions of the same story -- Twain's and Yep's)
Far From Home: Families of the Westward Journey, Lillian Schlissel (looks at both the migration experience west and immigrant experiences within that migration, from a whole family perspective)
The West, Geoffrey C. Ward
