Assigning An Overall Assessment

The four-point scale shown here is one of many ways to combine different sources of information into a holistic assessment. As you adapt this scale to meet the needs of your students, remember to build the scales according to the criteria you set.

Exceeds the standards = Students organize and convey historical information and ideas accurately and effectively. Students use a wide variety of primary and secondary resources to build original historical interpretations that show perspectives from various groups. Students evaluate conflicting information and draw their own conclusions using evidence and data. The presentation clearly relates to the theme and places its importance within an historical context.

Meets the standards = Students organize and convey historical information and ideas accurately and effectively. Students use a wide variety of primary and secondary resources to build original historical interpretations. The presentation clearly relates to the theme and places its importance within an historical context.

Approaches the standards = Students organize and convey historical information and ideas accurately and effectively. Mix of secondary and primary resources. Theme is depicted on a literal level, with minimal analysis.

Beginning stages = Students present historical information that includes a mix of accurate and inaccurate information. Major reliance on secondary sources and encyclopedias.
